Interview with Alexis Gray

30 September 2019

“I know it sounds a bit full on but I’m passionate about everyone being happy with childcare – early years practitioners, nurseries, children and parents.”

Alexis GrayAlexis Gray has been a self-employed working mum for more than 10 years. With children in nurseries from an early age, she was sometimes disappointed by the care her kids received and began to explore why. A combination of a shortage of qualified staff, poor pay and inflexible working practices for working mothers all contributed. She founded The Happy Childcare Company earlier this year to try and help solve these issues.

What drives you?

Two things. The first is trying to ensure that nurseries are able to recruit the best staff for the most important job in the world – helping our children develop and thrive. The second is trying to ensure that nursery nurses get paid £10 per hour for the most important job in the world – helping our children develop and thrive.

When are you happiest?

Spending time with my two little girls and husband.

What is your greatest fear?

Never having enough time to do all the things I want to get done!

What’s your favourite child-friendly past time?

I take my girls to the supermarket. When they were really little it was more about riding in the trolley and naming particular foods but now we talk about value for money, mass, totting up prices, where and how food is grown/made… And I get my weekly shopping done!

What was your most embarrassing moment?

Shaking a bottle of ketchup in a restaurant without checking the lid was screwed on properly. Let’s just say that I wasn’t the only one in the place who had to go home to shower and change!

What would your super power be?

I’d love to time travel (with toothpaste, toilet paper and antibiotics!).

Why should people get in touch with you?

To early years practitioners – as a specialist childcare recruitment agency, we have great childcare jobs at all levels and will help you find that short term or permanent position you’re looking for, matching individual needs to those of nearby nurseries.

To nurseries – if you’re looking to work with a local recruitment agency that understands the pressures you face to have local, qualified and caring staff in place we’ll do everything possible to help.

For everyone – I’d be so proud if we’re the people you call just for a bit of advice, a friendly ear or a supportive shoulder.
